Last week, we celebrated Golden Week – a time of rest and reflection for millions, and for me, a time that always brings thoughts of home and family. Growing up, this holiday wasn’t just about the time off—it was about reconnecting with our roots, enjoying the simple pleasures of being together, and honoring traditions.
Now, as life moves forward, I’ve found myself thinking more about how our homes can be a bridge between the past and present, where cultural rituals continue to thrive in modern spaces.
One thing I’ve realized is that our homes have the power to carry on these traditions, whether it’s in the way we organize our spaces or in the daily rituals that bring a sense of comfort and connection.
With this in mind, here are a few of my favorite ways to infuse cultural heritage into a modern home, while ensuring it remains functional and meaningful.
At the heart of our homes are the small rituals that keep us grounded. For me, one of these rituals is tea. As a child, I watched my family carefully prepare tea—savoring the act as much as the drink itself. Even today, making tea has become a comforting way to stay connected to the past.
Incorporating rituals like this into your daily life is a simple, yet powerful way to keep tradition alive in a modern space.
Whether it’s something as small as a tea-drinking corner or displaying your favorite tea set on open shelving, these rituals give meaning to the objects and spaces we use every day.
It’s less about recreating the past exactly as it was and more about allowing the essence of those traditions to live on in ways that feel personal and accessible.
As shown in the above, a neatly arranged tea station with carefully labeled jars can become a focal point in the kitchen or living space—a reminder that even in the busiest moments, there’s time to pause and connect with something meaningful.
Modern design is often about clean lines and minimalism, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for tradition. It’s all about balance—allowing cultural elements to have their place without overwhelming the space.
Consider blending traditional items with modern decor. For instance, displaying family heirlooms or treasured photographs on modern shelving can add depth and a sense of history to a room without cluttering it.
The images above captures this perfectly—a sleek, recessed bookshelf that showcases personal mementos and framed family photos in a contemporary setting.
By mixing clean lines with meaningful objects, you create a living space that honors both your past and your present.
Golden Week is also a reminder that our homes are not just for living—they are for reflecting. A quiet corner with a comfortable chair, a bookshelf filled with books or family albums, or even a display of meaningful artifacts can create a space for mindfulness.
Take my living room for example, it is open, bright, and calming. But what makes it truly special are the personal touches—a well-placed plant, a pillow with a story, a vase of flowers that brings life to the space. These small details keep us connected to our roots and offer a moment of pause, even in a busy modern home.
One of the easiest ways to honor your heritage in a modern home is by giving traditional items a place of honor. Whether it’s a framed piece of calligraphy, a family statue, or old photographs, these items become conversation pieces that carry forward the stories of your family.
Take a look at what we created in the family room at House of Tan, for example—a we placed a sculpture of our grandfather placed in a central part of the room, and a set of black-and-white family photos, carefully framed and hung together. These visual reminders of the past create a deeper connection to home, while seamlessly fitting into a contemporary design.

Golden Week is a time to celebrate and reconnect with our heritage. But even after the week ends, our homes can continue to be spaces where we honor tradition while living our modern lives.
It’s in the small, everyday rituals like drinking tea, the way we arrange our shelves with family photos, or even in creating spaces for reflection and calm, that our heritage finds its place in the present.
By blending modern design with these meaningful touches, you create a home that’s more than just a space—it’s a reflection of your story, one that honors both the past and the future.
