Do you regularly deep-clean your home, but your house still looks cluttered?
You’re not alone. In fact, most of the families I help are faced with the same issue: even though they tidy up regularly, the home still feels jam-packed with stuff at the end of a clean-up session.
It can be a frustrating experience, no-doubt, one that can leave you helpless with your mess. If you’re feeling unsettled in your own home, the problem may not be with your cleaning schedule, but rather with the volume of your things.
To help you clear the visual clutter and learn how to make every room in your home feel fresh, I put together this list of 10 common things that make your home feel messy and disorganized.
Children have a lot of stuff! And their things take up a lot of space while also adding heavy visual clutter. Toys are often bulky, colorful and loud and having this in your field of view on a regular basis will inevitably create stress and anxiety for you and your family. Put the toys behind drawers and doors and only keep out the items your child uses most often for easy access. This will cut down the visual clutter while also encouraging your children to become organized.
We’re all guilty of this one, at some point or another. Shelving is a great way to add vertical storage, but if you don’t keep your family in check, a lot of unnecessary items will soon accumulate. Shelves are easily accessible by everyone in the home, which makes them a prime spot for misplaced items to pile up.
A cluttered countertop will always be an overwhelming eyesore, no matter how clean the environment around it. It’s important to always have a dedicated “home” for all your things and if you can’t find space for it, it may be time to consider letting that item go.
Have you noticed how junk paper just accumulates? We always think we may use that flyer or that notice from three years ago, but in reality we know better. With everything easily accessible online, it shouldn’t be hard to go through your family mail pile and declutter everything you no longer need.
10 years ago, it was almost impossible to avoid keeping a pile of paper documents on any office desk but in our digital world today, all this dust accumulating paper can go. Your lungs will thank you and you will surely appreciate the increased motivation and focus at work.
Messy surfaces are not an inviting sight in any area of the home, not to mention it makes it so much harder to find what you’re looking for. Instead of placing everything and anything on your hard surfaces (dresser tops, shelves, half-walls, etc.), find a home for each item. Keep only what is necessary within reach and always return the items you use back to their home.
It’s normal to accumulate stuff over the years and that’s why decluttering regularly is a necessity if you don’t want your possessions to take over your house.
Gather all the items without a home in one place and start sorting through them. You can donate everything you no longer use so someone else can enjoy it and smile!
In my experience, if you don’t show your kids where to play, they tend to spread their toys all over the house. While you can’t add more space to our homes, you can always create little nooks to turn into cozy play areas.
The space below, for example, was left unused. It was located behind a sofa in my client’s living room and even though her daughter had already started to spend some time there, my client was convinced the space was too small to become a functional playroom. With some planning, measuring and creative imagination, I was able to transform the space into an adorable play area for her daughter to enjoy for years to come.
We keep our closets cluttered because we think we can just close the door and it all goes away. Your closet is one of the first things you see when you wake up in the morning, so it’s worth the time it takes to keep it well-organized with only in-season clothing & necessary accessories.
We’ve all been there: you want to quickly tidy up the living room at the end of the day, but there’s too much stuff everywhere, so you just push everything to the corner and leave it for the morning. The next night, the same scenario plays out again and before you know it, you forgot the last time you even saw that living room corner.
Decluttering these spaces can seem impossible to begin, but I promise it will go much smoother once you make the commitment. When you’re done with the job, your living room will feel much roomier and inviting.
Remember, clutter is easy to accumulate, but it’s also easy to clear! Keep an eye out for these 10 areas in your home and you’re already a step ahead of the mess.
Next time you go out shopping and pick up a new item, think whether you have the place to give it a home. This little practice will help you buy less and buy with intent. It will also keep the clutter in your home in check.
