Turning an ordinary act into a ritual can help us slow down and soothe the mind.
Things like making tea may seem simple, but in fact there are incredible benefits.
For me, making tea is a ritual I look forward to every morning. Making tea a habit helps me stay calm and keep my schedule organized. And when I’m making tea, I don’t worry about my phone messages or emails – it allows me to take time and enjoy the moment.
THE ART OF TEA DRINKING
It could be said that drinking tea is an art form, and the steps involved in serving it are fascinating, as well as educating us to slow down and live in the moment.
Today we are honored to study with Ms. Sun, who is recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Government as a highly respected Tea Master.
Previously, she has completed more than 10,000 tea display projects. I have a lot to learn from her in that respect.
In this event, we learned about 6 different teas and showed what teas are best for each season for the best health benefits.
Among other things, Master Sun showed us how to heat a tea set – she used hot water to warm the cups so that when the hot water was poured over the tea leaves, the aroma would fill the air.
There are a few considerations for your own practice
BEFORE YOU POUR
Washing the leaves may be necessary depending on the type of tea- some may not need cleaning.
DRINKING ETIQUETTE
The tea-drinker empties the cup only three-quarters full, leaving the remaining quarter empty to signify the gratitude used to carry the host.
TEA TASTING IN 3 STEPS
The tea master also teaches us how to taste tea in three steps:
Observe the color of tea
Let the tea linger in your mouth, completely feel the taste
Focus on its aftertaste
After a wonderful morning with these ladies, we learned the basics of tea tasting and how to slow down and enjoy the present moment and savor each sip of tea.
