Did you know there is a special day dedicated to organization? You may not have heard of this one, but mark your calendars this April 26th for Get Organized Day!
If one of your goals this year was to set aside time and organize your home, Get Organized Day is the perfect opportunity for you to establish a new system.
You Need an Organization System
In order to implement a house organization system you need to first create a cleaning/decluttering structure to your home for your entire family & household staff to follow.
How to Create and Implement a System at Home
If you’ve already tried implementing a cleaning routine for the entire family to follow with little success, I got you.
The most important thing to remember is that the responsibility doesn’t have to fall on you alone and that maintaining a home clean and serene requires collective effort.
My simple 3S Formula – Simplify, Streamline, Sustain to form a lasting cleaning habit.
01. Simplify the System
Simplify your household’s to do list in order to get everyone on board because the simpler the plan, the better. Ideally, the system will be simple enough that your kids will be able to work with it. Complex plans that require a lot of thought and are high maintenance won’t be sustainable in most homes.
02. Streamline the Process
When deciding how to organize your space, it’s important to know yourself. Create a system that works for you and your family’s needs. Everyone has different habits and so, a system that may work great for one person will not necessarily work for someone else. There is no one size fits all.
03. Sustain the Effort
Along with creating a system that makes sense to you, to create the best organizational system for your home you want to make sure it’s sustainable. All your family members must be aware of where things are and what their role is. For example, if you’re creating labels for all your glass jars, you need to ensure that you will be committed to do that for the long run and not just in the beginning.
Develop a Routine
It’s not enough to create the perfect system if you don’t incorporate it into your family’s routine. Have a routine and plan for when every job needs to be completed, will eliminate the anxiety surrounding cleaning and motivate everyone involved to actually get it done.
The good news when it comes to organizing your space and establishing routines is that it’s all about you! Start small and don’t try to reinvent the wheel. For instance, make Tuesday, Tidy Tuesday and clean your purse / junk box day (if you have one).
Create a Routine With the Children
Research shows that kids are happier and more responsible when they contribute to the family in some way. Establishing a routine early teaches them essential life skills and once your children no longer need a playroom, the habits you’ve helped them instill will carry over to their bedrooms and ultimately to their homes.
Ensure your children lend a hand and learn that everyone must participate to maintain a healthy home environment. I even trained my dogs, Gobi and Tika to put away their own toys!
Remember, organized people are not born organized – they have to cultivate healthy habits, which then help them to stay organized!
Follow the steps above to create and implement a cleaning system in your own home.
If you’re feeling a bit intimidated by the task, I recommend giving my last blog post a read, as it can help you calm the mind and find your purpose.
