How to declutter and organize your kids’ closet before school
With the new school year approaching in just a few weeks, now is the perfect time to go through your little one’s closet.
As children grow, their needs and clothing preferences change. This means that a lot of clothes are just sitting in closets with no hope of ever being worn again.
In this post, I’ll teach you how to declutter your kids’ closet so everything is neat and tidy before the new school year starts.
In this first step, you’ll want to take everything out of their closet and drawers.
Starting with a blank slate makes it easier to organize because you can clearly see how much space you have to work with and think of the best system that can help your child get ready every day.
And now that the clothes are out of the way make sure you give the inside of the closet and drawers a quick clean so that everything is fresh and ready to be organized.
With everything out of the closet, take a look at their clothes and decide what stays and what needs to go.
I like to work with different piles when sorting so I’ll have the following piles set up in either a bin or a laundry basket.
This is for seasonally appropriate clothes that my son can wear right now. I always switch my son’s clothing between seasons and I find that this makes it easier to stay on top of things and stay organized throughout the year.
This pile is for clothes and school uniforms that are too small or you don’t want anymore but are still in good condition.
If you have friends or relatives with young children, you can always donate these clothes to them or consider donating to a charity that can distribute these items to children in need.
In our home, we keep a donation box year-round for books and toys and we invite our friend’s and neighbor’s kids to look through it periodically.
This makes it easy for our son to find things to give away and makes him feel good that he is helping others too.
Finally, the items that you no longer want, that are too worn or beyond repair can be recycled.
Now that everything is neatly sorted, get the closet organized so that your child has an easy time getting ready for school every day.
Keep in mind that every child is different so you need to think about your own children’s needs in terms of what system works best for them.
Here are a few things to consider
