We all want to live in a neat and tidy home but sometimes it feels impossible to keep up with all the mess. It doesn’t have to be so stressful!
I’ve always loved the quote “clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions” because I truly believe it to be true. We can all have an organized home if we pause the overthinking and just start doing the things we need to do.
Here are 8 great tips to help you start organizing and decluttering your home today.
An organizing zone is a space where you store a category of items, i.e. all your bathroom necessities are stored in the bathroom.
When you organize by zones, you save time finding (and replacing) things. It’s the most efficient way to arrange items in your home and helps keep your home neat and tidy.
Compartmentalization means grouping similar items together and choosing a larger container/storage area to put those things inside of, “to contain them.”
For example, you’re compartmentalizing when you keep all your makeup in a makeup drawer or when you store all your winter clothing in a dedicated closet.
This simple concept helps you find your things easier because you always know where to find them.
First you zone, then you compartmentalize and finally, you designate a home for every item.
Having a space for everything you own helps you find things easily and prevents clutter from building up. Keep in mind that this system only works if return the items to their designated spots after use.
There are a variety of ways you can take advantage of vertical spaces to store and organize your things.
This is especially useful in small homes where floor space is a valuable commodity. You can line your walls with shelves, add pegboards for gym equipment or hang extra storage on the back of doors.
It’s no secret I use bins in all my organization projects because they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They’re also inexpensive and so versatile.
You can use bins to store toys, shoes, clothes, craft supplies, you name it. They’re also long-lasting and can be repurposed time and time again.
Save yourself the headache (and heartache) of a big decluttering job by scheduling a decluttering session every three months.
Decluttering is a great way to get rid of items you no longer use, want, or need so don’t let these items accumulate unattended for long periods of time.
Labeling bins or storage areas makes finding things easier, not only for you but for the entire family. Labeling is a good idea for everything from clothing, to toys, to cleaning supplies.
I have my own label maker so I can print directly from my phone. It’s one of the best investments I’ve made on my home organization journey.
Don’t wait until the end of the day to clean up your home. Instead, clean a little at a time in small chunks throughout the day.
Once you get started, you’ll feel better about what you’ve accomplished and be more motivated to continue. It also helps reinforce your new habits and routines.
I’ve shared these 8 tips with all my clients over the years and they have all reported noticeable results.
The key to organizing is making small changes, not extreme ones. If you can start by implementing just one of these tips and make it a habit, I’m sure you’ll be happy with the results.
