I have to admit, there’s something so satisfying about getting an area of my home completely reorganized and decluttered. I know that may sound crazy to some, but having an organized, functional space just makes me feel more in control and less stressed.
My study room was in desperate need of some reorganizational TLC. It had been organized to a T before, but after we had some home renovations done a few days ago, the movers just haphazardly put everything back into my cabinets. I can’t blame them – they don’t know my system! But it had been driving me a little crazy having to dig through a jumbled mess every time I needed to find something important.
So today, I finally got motivated and tackled that study room reorganization I’d been putting off. I want to share my process with you, because I truly believe that even if you feel like you’re drowning in clutter and disorganization, you can reclaim control!
My first step was a good old fashioned decluttering session. I went through every single file holder and mercilessly purged anything I didn’t truly need to hang onto anymore. Outdated documents, duplicates, papers from past projects that no longer served me – into the recycling bin they went! It felt so freeing to get rid of that unnecessary clutter.
Once I had culled it all down to just the essentials, I categorized and created new file folders based on subject matter. For instance, I made one folder for all our wedding documents and mementos, one for kid-related papers and schoolwork, another for financial documents, and so on. Getting everything sorted made such a difference!
Then it was time for my favorite part – labeling! Yes, I’m definitely obsessed with my label printer and honestly, I don’t care who knows it. Having a truly organized system where everything is clearly labeled and has a designated spot is such a game changer for avoiding stress and chaos.
I started by labeling the fronts of my pretty folder organizers. These things are amazing – the ones I have are good quality and can be reused for years by just updating the inserts. So smart and eco-friendly! Then I labeled every single file folder itself. I know, it sounds tedious. But trust me, it saves SO much time and headache in the long run when you’re desperately searching for something important.
If you’re really a perfectionist like me, you can take it a step further and use a labeled file holder as a benchmark to align all your other label placements. That way, when the file holders are side-by-side, the labels are all at the same level for a cohesive, uniform look.
With the folders all prepped, I zoned out my shelves and put the organizers back in their designated spots. I also have some smaller drawers that I use for office supplies like pens, markers, staplers and the like. Having separate storage zones for different categories of items makes it so easy to keep everything neat and tidy.
And you know what? This whole reorganization process that may have seemed monumental really only took me a few focused hours to complete. Once you get in a groove and system, it moves along pretty quickly! Now I have a calm, organized study space again and I won’t have to do such an overhaul for at least a few months. To maintain it, I’ll just regularly tackle and file away any new papers as they come in.
This type of system works particularly well when you have a ton of documents and files, or if you share a home office space with a partner or kids. With everything neatly sorted into designated zones, the work area never has to become a cluttered mess. It’s a total win-win!
So if you’ve been putting off getting your home office or other spaces reorganized and decluttered, I hope this gave you a little motivation and some tangible tips to get started. Having an organized system in place honestly brings me so much peace of mind. Why not share this with a friend or family member who could also benefit from a reorganization reboot?
