The holidays are undoubtedly a busy time and the last thing you probably want to do is to add another project to your to-do list. Nevertheless, it’s worth taking the time to declutter your home before the holidays start to get in full swing.
Decluttering this time of year can help you change your mindset for the better, tidy your home for when guests arrive, and free up space so you can have some much needed fun during the holiday season.
But, while decluttering helps you, it can also tremendously help others.
Taking the time to go through your home to declutter and donate these 3 types of items can make a big difference, especially for those in need.
1. Kids Toys
There is no better time to get your kids to declutter their toys- they’ll probably be receiving more soon anyway!
Explain to your children the purpose of decluttering and encourage them along their journey. This experience could even act as a starting point for conversations about giving, charitable causes and helping others.
Kids will enjoy this activity more if they can do it alongside you, so get busy together!
2. Hats, Mittens, Jackets That You No Longer Need
These items can be really useful this time of year, especially in colder climates. Make space in your closets by going through outgrown mittens & children’s boots, scarves and hats that you really use or no longer like.
If you have a coat or jacket you haven’t used in years, consider donating it also. You may think it’s better to keep it in case you may want it some time in the future, but isn’t it better if someone in need can use it right now?
3. Holiday Decor
The best time to declutter your Holiday decor is right now, as you’re pulling it all out of storage. It’s important to do this before you go out shopping for more decor, as chances are you already have what you’re looking for.
You may have grown tired of the same holiday decorations you’ve had for years, but chances are someone else would enjoy them! With your collection in front of you, separate the broken from the good. Discard unusable items and donate the rest to the charity of your choice.
4. New Items
We all have some items in our home that we purchased with the intention of using, but never got around to it. New items that are just sitting around, not serving any purpose.
Instead of letting them go to waste, consider gifting these items to someone who can truly appreciate them.
This also goes for presents that you have received but have no use for. Don’t let the guilt of giving it away stop you from making someone’s day. Appreciate the person and the thought behind the gift, and pass it further to someone else who could use it more.
The holidays are truly the season of giving and a time to think of others.
Affording everything during the holidays can be quite stressful for many, so why not give back by letting others enjoy the items you no longer have a need for.
It might not feel like a lot at the moment, but the impact you make could go a long way!
