Back-to-school season can be both fun and also a bit stressful for many parents and children. But it doesn’t have to be all bad! In this post, we’ll go over some tips on how to make this transition period a little less overwhelming and chaotic.
Before we dive in, we must acknowledge that getting ready for back to school means more than just getting our children’s uniforms and supplies in order, it also means making a few changes to our home. The following ideas on how to get organized for back to school will help you set your family up for success, even before you start shopping for supplies.
Decluttering your child’s clothing and unnecessary items from previous years is a good first step in getting your home ready. Clothes, toys and other supplies can quickly pile up in closets, under beds and in boxes, making it hard to find what you need. It’s not uncommon for some families to have stacks of boxes crammed into every corner of their home. Having a designated area for backpacks, sports equipment and papers will help keep everything organized throughout the school year.
Get rid of anything irrelevant. That means clothing that is too small, paper piles from previous years, you name it. You can donate unneeded items to a charity or have them recycled by dropping them off at your nearest recycling center.
It’s time to get back into a routine! I’ve noticed that families that do back to school best are those that stick to a daily schedule when making the transition from summer vacation. You can try this yourself starting today – instead of the usually chaotic morning rush to get the kids ready for school, have everything done at a designated time and in a specific order to ease the stress of the day.
Stick to regular bedtimes, meal times, grocery shopping times and even homework times if possible. These small steps will help support you and your child with getting back into this new routine so it doesn’t feel as overwhelming.
Keep the schedule you create updated and visible by the entire family so there are never any surprises and everyone knows what needs to get done.
Let’s face it, back to school means lots and lots of paperwork. School supply lists, calendars, project plans, take home papers from the teacher and more. With everything else you have on your plate right now, having a system for managing paper is a must!
The best way to do this is to set up an in/out tray on a counter or desk and have neatly labeled folders and bins that are easy to access. This will help keep all the paperwork together in one place while helping you to stay organized and avoid losing any important documents along the way.
Move the items from the in/out tray to their designated bins or separators once a week, and you’ll never feel overwhelmed with the amount of paper from school ever again.
By now, you must know I love labeling everything! I love it because it really helps you maintain the system you created and keep things in order. Label pencil cases, folders and books to keep everything accessible at all times. If your child is more of a visual learner, you can take pictures of the items and tape the picture to the front of the bin.
Does your child wear a uniform like mine? You can personalize their clothes, shoes (I recommend the Skechers black and white school shoes for a sturdy pair), backpacks or water bottles with custom labels!
This is a great way to not only help make their back to school season successful, but also to get your children excited about school.
Getting your child ready for back to school doesn’t have to be super stressful. By taking small steps to declutter, organize your family’s new routine, paperwork and labeling everything, you can help make this transition a little easier on you and your child.
