When people talk about digital detox, they’re usually talking about taking a break from the screens we are constantly looking at. While this is an important topic, today I want to talk about how you can declutter your digital life, so you can feel more organized, productive & calm when having to interact with technology.
Without a doubt, our most used devices today are our phones so that’s a good place to start our Digital Declutter. In this post I’ll cover the importance of decluttering:
& finally set boundaries on how/when you interact with technology.
Within our phones, we keep a large portion of our digital assets such as social media profiles, inboxes, photos etc. And because most of us rely on our phones daily, there comes a point when the amount of information on these devices becomes overwhelming and difficult to manage.
Constantly looking at clutter makes us stressed, frustrated and anxious. It’s a good idea to periodically do a thorough clean and keep only the apps that make sense for you, and delete the ones that you no longer need.
You can even take it a step further and organize the remaining apps in categories such as
If you’re like me, you’ll want to take it a step further and make your phone screen visually appealing! Choosing an Icon Pack that you find aesthetically pleasing is the perfect way to declutter your home screen, organize your phone and feel at ease. This topic got a lot of attention on my instagram, click here to find out how to do this for your iphone!
Widgets are another way I personalize my phone screen. I choose the ones that I find to be most useful in my day to day life and delete the ones I don’t use. For example, I have a calendar widget on my primary home screen so that I can see upcoming events.
If you’re scrolling through your social feeds and you’re not feeling inspired, it might be time to do a social media cleanse, and unsubscribe from the things that are making you feel this way. Remember, you are always in control of your environment so you’re encouraged to be picky with what you give your attention to.
Decluttering your email inbox can be such a satisfying process! You’ll feel so productive and in control when you’re able to say that you’ve read through all of your emails during the world day and filtered out the ones that don’t really need to be in your inbox.
To get rid of many unwanted subscriptions at once, you can use a free service like UnrollMe, that searches & finds all subscriptions associated with your email and allows you to easily unsubscribe right there from their dashboard.
I even categorize my inbox and have done so for many years! I recommend it to anyone who asks me how I manage my inbox.
If you’re like everyone else, you probably have a bunch of duplicate pictures, old screenshots, random downloads etc. You can declutter this space too so you can stay organized and free up space.
I’ve come to notice that notifications are very distracting and often interrupt my workflow so I’ve decided that the best thing for me is to simply turn them off. I know that this is not for everyone so if you’d like to keep your notifications, I encourage you to try out the Do Not Disturb feature on your phone and simply turn off the notifications during your off time. Build up this practice until a solid boundary is in place and you’re feeling good about how you spend your time.
Finally, doing a digital declutter can help you reconnect with what truly matters in life. The information we surround ourselves with has a huge impact on us so it’s important to do a digital declutter from time to time so that we can take control of this influence and be inspired by the positive things in our lives, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the negative.
I encourage you to try this at home and tell me about your experience!
