If you already work in a high-stress environment, or deal with stress daily, one of the best gifts you can give yourself is a calm and relaxing home sanctuary.
But can you ever truly relax in a cluttered environment?
Many of us enjoy our homes and think that the mess around us doesn’t affect our moods and the way we feel, but it does indeed have a huge effect on our subconscious thoughts and daily attitudes.
As a professional organizer, I know this very well because the majority of my clients reach out to me due to the anxiety caused by all the clutter in their homes.
A chaotic environment affects everyone mentally & physically. Research shows that clutter increases stress, decreases productivity, and makes it more difficult to unwind because it over-stimulates our senses.
Physically, being surrounded by clutter encourages bad habits such as unhealthy eating and sleep problems. Clutter also accumulates dust, affects our ability to focus and leaves us feeling anxious, helpless & overwhelmed in our own homes.
We accumulate clutter because of many reasons. Most of the people I know (including me) struggle with consumer impulses, emotional sentiments attached to items and wanting to hold on to memories associated with our possessions. Sometimes we’re afraid to let go because we think we may need our stuff sometime in the future.
Unfortunately, by avoiding dealing with our consumerism issues, fears and guilty emotions, we end up adding to the anxiety already present.
Getting rid of things is emotional work and facing our fears can be a challenge, but it’s one you can tackle, as long as you have the right attitude and dedication to the task at hand. Overcoming consumerism will also lead to less stress, less debt, more time, and, most importantly, more freedom.
I’m so happy every time I finish a project and I see my clients beaming with confidence and strength from knowing that they could face their challenges head-on and succeed.
Home shame leaves many unwilling to socialize and have friends over.
My friend once admitted to me not wanting to entertain family & guests at her house for more than two years because of the shame she felt toward her cluttered home.
This clutter-depression-anxiety cycle can and should be stopped. You can do it for yourself or have someone help you with the process.
Your professional organizer will help you work through your anxiety and support you through all the steps on your decluttering journey.
In my agency, because I understand that this is very much an emotional journey, my team and I take the time to listen to your needs and understand your motivations to support you better. If you have any questions about your particular situation, reach out to me here to schedule a session.
