This Sunday I had the pleasure of organizing our annual Charity drive in collaboration with Xun Charity Bazaar here in Shanghai. I would like to thank everyone who attended and made the event a great success.
For those who couldn’t be there, here is a quick recap:
We hosted a public welfare event to promote sustainability, donate to charity, support migrant children’s projects, and ultimately help children and families in the Miao Tribe grow up healthy and happy!
The event was dedicated to second-hand fashion. We accepted donations of all kinds of clothing—from accessories to shoes to bags—and sold them at a discount price.
All proceeds went to the charity of our choosing and this year, we picked the Miao Tribe.
The Miao Tribe
The Miao are a colorful and culturally- and historically-rich ethnic minority belonging to South China.
They create a variety of colorful arts and crafts, including cross-stitch work, embroidery, weaving, batik, and paper cuts. Their batik technique dates back 1,000 years!
Despite their talents, the Miao have been poverty-stricken for hundreds of years and continue to struggle with poverty even today.
Many girls still can’t attend school because their families need them to work.
This is the reason why we decided to help.
At least 25% of every sale at the Xun Charity Bazaar will be donated to this tribe to help educate women and girls in these remote communities.
Through Bless the Mess we have donated 100% of the profits every single year.
An annual affair
This is the 4th year I set up a booth for Bless the Mess at the Charity Market and I always have so much fun connecting with the community.
My favorite part of this initiative is that together we can help support and inspire one another. Together we can get rid of the things that no longer serve us and make room for more of what we truly enjoy, all while making a difference in the lives of others.
The items we sold
In our bazaar booths, there were Roger Vivier shoes, Chanel bags, and a wealth of other quality second-hand items and accessories.
In fact, throughout the charity sale, many famous brands were sold at great prices.
The idea was to find a new home for our goods that no longer serve a purpose.
I personally was willing to gift my things to someone whom I knew really really wanted it.
It was enough for me to know that for example, my top that was unworn for many years was going to a buyer who could get so much more mileage out of it than I ever did.
The results
Everyone had a great time today and we were able to sell over 165 items. As a result, raised more than $2500 USD for the Miao Tribe.
Not bad for only 6 hours!
A special thanks to everyone that participated in this event.
To the volunteers, thank you for finding the time to extend a hand to those that need it most.
To those that donated, thank you for giving a second life and purpose to your beloved items.
And to those that shopped, thank you for coming to support us in our initiative.
We could not have done it without you all!
