Work-life balance is a term being thrown around a lot these days but, in our fast-paced world it is often difficult to figure out what it really means.
I like to think of work-life balance as mindful productivity and I believe it is one of the most important tools for improving your productivity, creativity and overall health.
If you feel like working all the time is causing your performance in other parts of your life to suffer then it’s time for a change. And if you’re not happy, you can implement many strategies to improve your work-life balance.
Below are some tips that helped me get closer to the philosophy of work-life balance.
Find Something That Makes You Feel Fulfilled Outside of Work
Over the years the line between our work and our personal life has increasingly blurred and it is affecting our productivity and general happiness.
Even when our work is interesting and we like what we do, we should make sure to find something outside of work that gives us energy and makes us feel fulfilled. Think about hobbies, sports, traveling… The point is to make sure you aren’t becoming so dependent on your work that it starts to be your only source of joy.
Make Sure You Schedule Time for Self-care, Exercise, and Rest
I find that unless I physically schedule time in my weekly calendar to exercise, rest and do other self-care activities, I become too work-focused and find other ways to fill my time.
I encourage you to try it! Instead of proclaiming that you will start working on your goal next week, take 5 minutes and commit yourself by adding the time required in your calendar. It may sound simple but this easy-to-overlook habit has a great impact on your motivation and is guaranteed to get you one step closer to balancing work and life.
Take Breaks From Work on a Regular Basis So You Can Relax and Recharge
Having a break and unplugging is important especially in our always-on world. Make sure to pace yourself and take regular breaks to recharge your batteries.
I recommend taking 5 minutes every few hours to have a walk around, listen to some music or do something that isn’t work related. This allows your brain to rest and will help you become more focused and motivated during your work time.
Spend Time With the People You Love
Nourish your soul by surrounding yourself with the people who mean the most to you. Working all the time can easily cause us to neglect your family and friends, but it is essential to make sure they remain a priority for us.
I recommend sharing what is going on in your life with those you love and allowing them to help and support you. Our entourage can become a great source of motivation and encouragement for us allowing us to feel less stressed about our daily challenges.
Finally work-life balance is achievable when you make it a priority and commit to making small changes on a regular basis. Placing limits on your work time will help you appreciate life and feel truly fulfilled. I encourage you to try it and let me know how it goes @bless_the_mess_!
