The beginning of the school year can feel like setting up dominoes – if everything’s lined up just right, the year can glide smoothly.
But if there’s chaos from the start? It could all tumble down.
That’s where I come in, sharing my expertise not just as a professional organizer but as someone who’s been in the trenches of parenting.
Having a distinct area for the school desk and another for playtime ensures that when it’s time for homework, the focus is purely on school work.
If space is not an issue, I always recommend keeping all toys out of the room where your children sleep and do their homework.
The difference between a designated school desk and a play area isn’t just physical, but psychological.
That’s why it’s essential to keep these areas as separate as possible.
When your child sits at their school desk, their brain needs to receive one clear message: it’s time to focus.
To make any school desk area truly productive, distractions must be minimized.
It’s not just about the physical space; it’s about the mental space too. Too many times I’d find toys, old drawings, or outdated school supplies strewn across Nick’s desk.
To overcome this, at the start of every new year, we have a little purge session.
Last year’s completed notebooks, dried-up markers, toys—they need to go.
A clutter-free space isn’t just about neatness; it’s about removing obstacles to concentration.
That means taking away random toys, older study materials, and yes, sometimes even artwork that might invite daydreaming during study time.
Consider it curating a space where focus can thrive.
Learning tools change as kids grow.
Kindergarteners might need those thick pencils, while fourth graders move on to fountain pens.
The point is, review and refresh regularly.
And only keep the essentials out:
It sounds like a lot, but when organized, it’s just the right amount.

For young children, custom name tags are really practical.
Think about it – jackets, lunch boxes, backpacks; these items can easily get misplaced.
With customized tags, not only can lost items find their way back to your child, but they also help young ones identify their belongings with ease.
I’ve personally experimented with a range of name tags: from vibrant stickers to fun stamps, even adorable fabric keychains.
But the type of tag matters less than the consistent use of them.
I use labels. A lot.
And while I have my favorites, like custom iron-on patches or sticker-printed labels, it doesn’t always need to be that fancy.
In the children’s room, where things change rapidly, post-it notes often do the trick, especially for those cardboard organizers that house current school materials.
They’re easy to change out, and they don’t leave a residue.
A well-organized closet is the key to seamless mornings.
It’s not just about looking organized; it’s about functionality and peace of mind.
Nick has a uniform so it’s already a little easier to get dressed in the morning.
I took it up a notch and made sure everything had its place and was easy to find.
I added drawer separators to ensure every piece of clothing—from pants and shirts to socks and sportswear—has its designated spot.
This level of organization means there’s no rummaging or second-guessing.
An organized closet doesn’t just elevate the closet’s appearance; it streamlines our children’s routine, potentially saving hours over a week and gifting us calm, efficient starts to our days.
Preparing a room for the school year isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a space where our kids can succeed and feel in control.
It’s taking one of the chaotic elements out of the whirlwind that can be school life.
And if you start with these steps, you’re well on your way to setting those dominoes up for success.
