Due to their many medicinal and recreational uses as well as countless benefits, I’ve always loved and used essential oils in my home.

From stress relief to improving sleep quality, you can use essential oils for everything.

I have so much appreciation for these oils, I even studied to become a NAHA certified health coach and dōTERRA® Product Specialist so that I can learn more and promote their benefits to others looking for a natural alternative to conventional cleaning/healing solutions.

These oils have so many great properties and the best part is, they’re all-natural!

Last month, I had the opportunity to teach a class on cleaning with essential oils. We discussed the benefits of making the switch to natural products and even built our own cleaning solutions.

Making the Switch to Natural Products

Cleaning with essential oils is an excellent and natural way to clean your home and reduce chemical exposure. While it can be more expensive to purchase these natural products, the benefits far outweigh the cost.

Plus, making your own cleaning products allows you to avoid the chemical-ridden pre-made options (even if they are cheaper) and customize them to your own needs.

I always recommend you use pure, therapeutic grade essential oils for the best results. Remember – when it comes to oils, a little goes a long way.

Essential Oils With Cleaning Properties

Some essential oils have benefits that make them perfect for home cleaning. Here are a few of my favorites from the dōTERRA collection:

dōTERRA On Guard ® Protective Blend: This popular blend consists of cinnamon, wild orange, eucalyptus, clove and rosemary.

It leaves a warm, spicy and woody smell and can be used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaner.

dōTERRA On Guard ® Cleaner Concentrate: A multi-purpose concentrate, this cleaner is ideal for effectively disinfecting hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, or any area while leaving behind a fresh and energizing smell.

Just mix 2 tbsp of concentrate per 24 oz. of water.

Lemon oil: Use this lemon oil to purify and cleanse any surface in your home. It leaves behind a clean, fresh, citrus aroma that will linger on all day.

Purify Cleansing Blend: Composed of Lemon Peel, Siberian Fir Needle, Citronella Grass, Lime Peel, Tea Tree Leaf and Cilantro Herb essential oils, this blend leaves an airy, fresh scent on surfaces and in the air.

Citrus Bliss ® Invigorating Blend: Another perfect blend, the Citrus Bliss is made up from Wild Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, Grapefruit Peel, Mandarin Peel, Bergamot Peel, Tangerine Peel, Clementine Peel essential oils and Vanilla Bean Absolute.

Mix it with water to create a splendid solution for wiping down countertops and other surfaces while producing a fresh, sweet scent.

The Perfect Essential Oil Amount to Use

Personally, I use 2 – 3 drops of essential oil for every 16 oz. of water. This is a great starting point for new users.

HERE’S A HANDY GUIDE TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CREATING YOUR OWN CONCOCTION

• Strong: 5 (or less) drops of essential oil, 2–3 cups of cleaning solution.
• Stronger: 10–15 drops of essential oil, 3–5 cups of cleaning solution.
• Strongest: 20+ drops. This is for particularly pesky or difficult cleaning jobs.

Where to Use Your Essential Oil Cleaning Solutions

Most essential oil cleaning solutions are safe for most surfaces. I use them in many applications such as:

• Cleansing the air and dispelling odors
• Cleaning surfaces in the kitchen & bathroom
• For sticky messes
• On wood
• For my laundry
• On furniture and linens
• Cleaning the carpet
• and even as a powerful glass cleaner

As you can see, essential oils have many applications in the home and can be used as powerful, non-toxic cleaners.
