When it comes to organizing your things, one of the main ideas we professional organizers promote is creating a designated space, or a home, for each item. But what do you do if you travel around or live in a rental not meant to be permanent?
Should you just live amongst your things and clutter until you find your forever home to organize properly?
The obvious answer is of course not!
It’s not impossible to get and to stay organized in a temporary rental space.
In fact, organizing your space will give you a sense of order, help you to use your space more efficiently and make every day living easier in a space that feels warm and inviting.
Good organization, no matter what space you live in, will always make your temporary rental feel more like home.
Here are 5 tips to get you started.
1. Only Bring the Things That You Need & Love
This is the first rule my clients and I lay down when decluttering before a move.
While it’s tempting to just pack everything you own, if you don’t love the item or you only use it a handful of times per year, it’s not worth the space.
Better to donate it and make space for things that actually matter.
This goes for clothing, furniture pieces, books, toys, kitchenware, appliances and even electronics.
2. Start by Assessing the New Space You Have
Take a good look around your rental.
How much storage space do you have?
Do you need furniture with integrated storage?
Can the rooms accommodate more things or is it time to downsize further?
This exercise will help you determine what storage solutions to use when organizing the space and make it work for your family.
3. Store Your Items in Boxes, Bins & Containers
These supplies are an essential part of my organizing tool belt. They help separate things and make it so much easier to unpack in your new space.
Make sure to label everything clearly so you can find what you’re looking for at a glance.
When moving, bring each box to its designated area before unpacking.
You can even continue storing items you don’t often use (and seasonal items) in your labeled containers for easy access.
4. Organize for Efficiency
If possible, designate a space for every one of your items. As I already mentioned, this is the easiest way to avoid clutter and remain organized long-term.
My favorite organization hack for renters is using open shelving with labeled baskets!
This thick not only makes your space feel bright & airy, it also makes it so much easier to find things especially when you have a lot of different items to organize.
5. Clean & Purify Your Space Often
Just because you’re living in a rental, doesn’t mean you can’t make it feel like a home.
A rental space that is organized and feels clean goes a long way for the emotional health of all family members.
I suggest dusting and vacuuming on the regular, wiping everything down with a natural cleaning solution once or twice a week, and always diffusing fresh essential oils.
These 5 tips are guaranteed to make your new space feel more comfortable and will also make it easier to transition out of it when the time is right.
We often view rentals as transitional spaces that aren’t ours to transform but, with a little organization, it’s easy to build a sense of home in any space!
