I’ll be the first to admit that there’s something simply enchanting about a tidy, organized home. It’s like a sigh of relief after a long, stressful day, a quiet sanctuary where your mind finds peace.
I truly believe that our connection to material things can sometimes hinder our freedom.
And I’ve come to realize that more of us are seeking this serenity, this clutter-free lifestyle, than ever before.
Recently, I decided to conduct an informal survey across various Facebook groups to understand why people are decluttering, and why they’re choosing simplicity over material abundance.
One reason that kept surfacing was the desire to experience a sense of freedom, a liberation from the constant need to acquire, manage, and maintain stuff.
Quite a few responders noted that managing a home brimming with stuff felt like a full-time job.
They were longing to switch from being a home organizer to enjoying their home. Their goal?
Simplifying their lives, to make their homes feel less like a continuous project and more like a source of comfort and joy.
Among the many heartfelt responses, some opened up about the challenge of dealing with inherited clutter.
They yearned to unburden themselves from the weight of the past, to honor their loved ones in memory rather than in material things.

Becoming parents seemed to be another significant driver towards a more organized home.
The chaos and clutter that comes with children highlighted the need for organization and simplicity.
Parents wanted to create spaces that were safe, tidy, and nurturing for their growing families.

Another compelling incentive for decluttering was to reduce the time spent on cleaning.
The simpler their surroundings, the less there was to clean, and the more time there was for life’s true pleasures – reading a book, savoring a cup of coffee, spending time with family, or simply doing nothing.
Interestingly, many people were seeking to declutter so they could focus their energy on the essentials.
They realized that it wasn’t the stuff filling their homes but the experiences and relationships in their lives that brought real happiness.
One poignant response was from someone who had experienced a break-in.
This incident made them realize that the memories associated with things were more important than the items themselves.
It brought them to embrace minimalism, to value the intangible more than the tangible.
Also, people shared their struggles with constantly searching for misplaced items in their homes.
They craved a more organized lifestyle to save time, to rid themselves of the frustration caused by disorder and disarray.
