Getting organized can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into smaller steps can make it more manageable. I’ve found that the key is to start small, be consistent, and celebrate your progress along the way. Getting organized is a journey, but taking those first few steps can make a big difference.
Here are 7 tips to help you get started:
Start small. Don’t try to tackle your entire home or life all at once. Pick one area or task that’s been particularly bothering you, like your closet, desk, or email inbox, and focus on that first.
Set a timer. Work in short bursts of 20-30 minutes at a time. This can make the task feel less daunting and help you stay focused.
Use the three-box method. Get three boxes or bins and label them “Keep,” “Donate/Sell,” and “Trash.” Go through your items and quickly sort them into the appropriate boxes.
Create a functional system. As you’re decluttering, think about how you can set up better organizational systems for the remaining items. For example, use drawer organizers, file folders, or storage bins with labels.
Schedule recurring decluttering sessions. Getting organized is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Set a recurring reminder on your calendar to declutter for 30 minutes every week or month.
Tackle one type of clutter at a time. Focus on one category, like clothes, papers, or digital clutter, until you’ve made progress in that area before moving on to the next.
Ask for help. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask a friend or family member for assistance or moral support.
While that list covers some practical strategies, I know from experience that the biggest hurdle is often just getting started and staying motivated. That’s where my passion for teaching comes in.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of giving talks and working directly with families to help them implement these types of sustainable organizational systems. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the weight lift off someone’s shoulders when they finally gain control over their clutter and chaos.
I’m always excited for opportunities to share my expertise on this subject. Whether it’s giving an informal session to a local community group or speaking at a larger event, I truly enjoy empowering others with the tools and mindset shifts to transform their living spaces. My own journey taught me that small, consistent steps are the path to lasting change.
If you’re interested in having me speak to your organization about effective home organization techniques, I’d be delighted to discuss possibilities. With years of experience under my belt, I can tailor my talks to fit your group’s unique needs and pain points. Let’s get you on the road to the organized, clutter-free life you crave!
