Inside the House of Tan Series 

Stepping into the living room of the House of Tan is like walking into a serene sanctuary where every detail tells a story. I designed this space to seamlessly blend modern aesthetics with our rich family heritage, creating an environment that is both inviting and deeply meaningful to us.

Even before the construction of the living room began, I had already picked out a stunning digital art piece featuring animated koi fish. I knew this artwork would eventually find its perfect place in the House of Tan.

In Chinese culture, the koi symbolizes family harmony and prosperity making it a meaningful addition to our home. 

The circular design of this artwork draws the eye and adds a dynamic element to the room, making it a focal point that breathes life into the space.

Adding to the room’s unique character is a ceramic plate of fruit, a piece I acquired during a memorable trip to Jingdezhen.  

The hyper-realistic depiction of the fruit, with its intricate details and lifelike appearance, showcases the artistry and craftsmanship involved in its creation. 

This piece, placed prominently on the table, serves as a conversation starter and a testament to my appreciation of fine art and travel.

One of the most significant elements in the living room is the display of our family constitution, written by grandfather, Dr. Tan Siu Lin. 

The constitution is meticulously pieced together using rustic gold Chinese characters, creating a striking visual that emphasizes the importance of our family values and history. 

This profound piece is complemented by a sculpture of Dr. Tan Siu Lin, which stands proudly nearby, further grounding the room in our familial legacy and respect.

Touches of greenery have been strategically placed in the corners to make the room feel fresh and vibrant. 

These plants add a splash of color and enhance the room’s overall sense of tranquility and life. The bookshelves, curated with a mix of books and artistic pieces, reflect a balanced lifestyle. 

The careful selection of book bindings, sculptures, and ceramics creates a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing display.

A notable feature of the living room is the partition that allows the space to be divided into a tea room and a living room. This flexible design enables us to host pre-function cocktails in the living room while maintaining the option for private meetings in the tea room. 

The partition adds versatility to the space, making it ideal for both intimate gatherings and larger events.

The thoughtful integration of personal touches and family history into the modern design of the living room makes the House of Tan a perfect example of how contemporary living can honor and celebrate the past. 

This room is not just a place for relaxation and entertainment; it is a living testament to the values, traditions, and artistry that define the Tan family.
