If you look at my Pinterest boards, you’ll notice that recently, I’ve been really into small space design, especially for laundry rooms. There’s something so satisfying about turning what’s often a cramped, overlooked area into a space that’s both beautiful and functional.
Whether you have a tiny corner or a more narrow space to work with, creating a laundry room that makes everyday tasks easier (and a bit more enjoyable) is absolutely possible.
Here are some of my favorite ideas and design tips to maximize a small laundry space without sacrificing style or efficiency.
When floor space is limited, go vertical. If you take a look at the first image from my Pinterest collection, you’ll see a perfect example of built-in shelves around stacked washers and dryers. These shelves aren’t just for display—they’re ideal for storing laundry baskets, detergent, and other necessities while keeping everything within easy reach.
One clever idea I’ve seen is adding pull-out shelves or folding stations between appliances, just like the one in the second image below.
It gives you a convenient place to fold laundry or set down detergent bottles, and when you’re done, it slides away neatly.
If there’s one feature I love, it’s a pull-out drying rack. It’s perfect for when you don’t have space for a traditional drying line or rack.
If you look at the images below, you’ll see how this design element can be tucked away when not in use, but when you need to air dry delicate items, it pulls out effortlessly.
This kind of space-saving idea is ideal for small laundry rooms, where every inch counts.
And don’t forget to make use of those awkward spaces by installing a drying rack between two cabinets.
Laundry rooms aren’t just for washing clothes; they’re for sorting, folding, and organizing too. One of my favorite small space tips is combining hanging and folding spaces in one area.
Installing a rod above the counter lets you hang shirts straight from the dryer to prevent wrinkles, while the countertop provides ample space for folding.
If your space is really tight, consider a fold-down ironing board or hanging hooks on the back of the door for a pop-up folding station. This makes the room multifunctional without feeling cluttered.
If you’re like me, you might not want your laundry area always on display. One of the best design choices I’ve come across is using cabinetry to hide washers, dryers, and clutter.
Take a look at the image below —built-in cabinets around appliances not only give a cleaner, more minimalist look, but they also offer tons of extra storage.
Cabinets with sliding or folding doors are especially great if you want the space to feel sleek and polished. You can even go the extra mile by choosing finishes that complement the overall design of your home, whether it’s natural wood or bold, modern hues.
Let’s face it—laundry is one of those never-ending chores. But a little organization goes a long way in making the task more manageable.
Woven baskets and labeled jars (like in the final image) are not only practical but also add a touch of warmth to an otherwise utilitarian space.
I always recommend grouping similar items together (detergents, fabric softeners, stain removers) in matching containers or bins.
This not only keeps your space neat but also makes it easier to find what you need quickly. And if you’re really short on space, consider wall-mounted storage solutions to keep counters clear.
In smaller spaces, it’s all about creative use of every inch. I’ve seen some beautiful ideas on Pinterest where every corner is maximized. For example, if you have a narrow, unused space next to your washer, it’s perfect for a slide-out shelf to hold cleaning supplies. You could also use a narrow pull-out cart to store items vertically.
Another clever hack is using the inside of cabinet doors. Hanging racks or even simple hooks can be installed to store smaller items like cleaning cloths, brushes, or lint rollers. This makes sure that no space is wasted, and everything has a dedicated spot.
Just because your laundry room is small doesn’t mean it can’t make a big impact. With a few smart design choices, you can transform this everyday space into one that’s both functional and beautiful.
Whether it’s through built-in storage, creative drying solutions, or stylish cabinets, there are countless ways to make your laundry room work for you.
