Designing the outdoor terrace at House of Tan has been one of the most rewarding aspects of bringing our semi-private clubhouse to life. This space, in particular, holds a special place in my heart, as it perfectly embodies the blend of relaxation and sophistication that I envisioned for our members and guests.
I wanted a terrace that wasn’t just an extension of our indoor spaces but a destination in its own right—a place where you could unwind, entertain, and connect with others while being surrounded by the beauty of nature.
As I walk you through this design journey, I hope you’ll see the thought and care that went into every detail.
Living in Shanghai means experiencing a dynamic range of weather throughout the year. From the vibrant spring blooms to the sultry summer evenings, and even the crisp autumn air, this city offers a unique backdrop that begs to be enjoyed outdoors.
That’s one of the reasons I felt it was essential to include an outdoor terrace at House of Tan.
The terrace allows us to make the most of Shanghai’s ever-changing weather, offering a space where you can feel the breeze, soak in the sun, or simply enjoy the atmosphere as the seasons shift.
An outdoor space is more than just a place to relax; it’s an ideal setting for bringing people together. Whether hosting business partners, colleagues, family, or friends, the terrace at House of Tan offers a flexible and inviting environment for any occasion.
One of the features I love most about this space is its ability to cater to different types of gatherings.
From casual get-togethers with friends to more formal dinners with business associates, the terrace is equipped to handle it all. And with the convenience of being able to service the terrace with any of our three on-site restaurants, you can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences without ever leaving this beautiful setting.

When it came to the layout of the terrace, I wanted to create a space that was both spacious and intimate, with a variety of seating options to suit different social needs.
The design incorporates a mix of high bar seating, dining tables, and casual lounge areas, offering flexibility and choice for our guests.
Whether you’re looking to dine, relax, or engage in deep conversation, the terrace provides the perfect setting.
The furniture on the terrace was carefully selected to balance comfort with contemporary style. I opted for woven chairs with cushioned seats, paired with sleek, minimalist tables. This combination creates a harmony between modern aesthetics and practical comfort.
The neutral tones of the upholstery were chosen to complement the natural surroundings, allowing the focus to remain on the stunning views and the mesmerizing sunset.
Lighting is one of those elements that can make or break an outdoor space, and for the House of Tan terrace, I wanted to make sure that the ambiance was just right.
As the sun sets, the terrace transforms with the help of subtle and strategic lighting.
Lantern-style floor lights and soft under-table lighting cast a warm, inviting glow across the space, enhancing its atmosphere without overpowering the natural beauty of the setting.
Incorporating greenery was a key part of the terrace design, as I wanted the space to feel connected to nature.
Potted trees and plants are thoughtfully placed throughout the terrace, creating a serene environment that softens the hard lines of the modern furniture and architecture.
These natural elements not only add to the aesthetic appeal but also help define different zones within the terrace, making the space feel more intimate and inviting.
The color scheme of the terrace is muted and cohesive, with earthy tones and shades of green that harmonize with the natural surroundings.
These colors were chosen to enhance the feeling of being in a natural oasis, even in the heart of the city.
The soft lighting further accentuates these tones, creating a cozy and connected environment that feels warm and inviting, especially as day turns to night.
One of the most important aspects of the terrace design was its orientation towards the sunset.
I wanted to make sure that guests could fully enjoy the breathtaking views as the sky changes colors in the evening.
The seating arrangements are carefully positioned to maximize this experience, making the terrace not just a place to sit, but a destination where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
As you can see, every choice I made for the terrace, from the layout and furniture to the lighting and natural elements, I made with the intention of creating a space that is functional and a true retreat from the hustle of daily life.
