Flowers are such a beautiful and meaningful way to commemorate life’s special moments – but it’s heartbreaking when they inevitably wilt and die. Those gorgeous blooms deserved to be preserved and treasured forever as lasting mementos.
But did you know there’s an easy way to do just that? As a busy mom, finding the time for crafty projects is tough – but I recently took a fun dried flower class from the Grace’s Floral for Mother’s Day and it sparked my creativity.
It was so rewarding to create lasting keepsakes from those fresh florals, and now I’m inspired to share this simple idea so you can turn your special occasion flowers into gorgeous decorative pieces.
The drying process is the first key step to preserving those delicate petals so they truly last forever.
Carefully remove any leaves and trim the stems down to just a few inches. For air drying, find a dark, dry area away from sunlight and hang the flowers upside down for 2-3 weeks until completely dehydrated.
The microwave method works more quickly – simply place the flowers between two paper towels and microwave in 30 second intervals until dried out. Silica gel desiccant packs or hanging upside down with drying chemicals are other effective methods.
Once you’ve dried out those meaningful blooms from bouquets, centerpieces or leis, the creative possibilities are endless for turning them into display-worthy decor!
One charming idea is a lovely jewelry dish made from your wedding flowers. Arrange the dried petals in a shallow plate or ring dish, then pour a layer of clear epoxy resin over the top to encase them.
Once it fully cures and hardens with the help of UV lighting, you have an elegant tray to keep your rings, earrings and necklaces organized in style – with the flowers from your magical wedding day preserved forever.
Another fun option is pouring those dried blooms into clear epoxy resin molds to create coasters, ornaments, sun-catchers or paperweights.
Simply arrange your assortment of petals and blossoms in the mold, then slowly pour in the liquid resin, taking care not to move the flowers around too much.
Allow it to fully cure per package instructions until solid. The transparent look allows those preserved florals to be displayed in all their glory!
If you want decorative opaque pieces, get creative with repurposing dishes, plates or other containers.
I made the most charming decorative tray by layering an assortment of dried flowers in a small oven-safe baking dish, then pouring a layer of colored epoxy resin over the top to fully encase them. The key is that you need to heat the resin under the correct UV-safe lighting for the correct amount of time.
Any oven-proof plate, bowl or container would work – the more meaningful the item, the more special your creation will be! Just be sure to let the resin fully cure and harden per the directions.
With these simple steps, I can’t wait to start preserving and showcasing flowers from all of life’s milestone moments and meaningful occasions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and graduations.
Displaying these unique handmade pieces in my home will be such a joy, allowing me to revisit those happy memories each time I look at them. What a wonderful way to keep honoring and celebrating those landmark events for years to come!
I recently took this class from Grace’s Floral, based in Shanghai, for preserving flowers and now I’m already dreaming up gorgeous dried bloom and epoxy resin creations to make as gifts.
I can’t wait to pick up all the crafting supplies I need like molds, dishes, resin and of course some fresh bouquets to dry. Stay tuned for my upcoming product haul sharing all my favorite finds!
