Declutter and refresh the heart of your home with some of my favorite tips and essential decluttering advice.
Even if you don’t cook much, most of us spend a lot of time in our kitchens, and for this reason, simplifying your kitchen space could be one of the best decisions you’ll make.
Organizing your kitchen will also save you time & money. I know I personally cut down household waste and grocery costs by at least 30%.
Minimalist kitchens are organized and offer plenty of storage solutions. They’re easy to keep clean, are visually appealing and clutter-free.
Get inspired to declutter with our easy, tried & true tips for achieving & maintaining a clean, minimal kitchen.
Decluttering your kitchen is just like decluttering everything else. First you must commit to your task and dedicate a time to do it. Next start in the area you’re looking too declutter and pull out all of the items.
Once the shelves are empty and your stuff is in front of you, go though your items and ask yourself:
If you answered no to any of the questions above, place the item in question in your donation or discard bin. To designate your bins, use my free decluttering printable templates here.
In my own kitchen the first thing I did was to make the switch to clear jars. Using clear containers makes everything easier to spot, the whole pantry looks neater and it inspires more creativity when cooking.
Decant your dry goods, plastic packaging and cereal boxes into clear jars and store them in your pantry. Check your container when making your grocery list – it’s so much easier to notice what needs a refill. I don’t buy unless we have an empty jar.
Store frequently used flour and dry condiments on the tabletop for easy access when cooking.
Let’s be honest, unless you have a huge professional range in your kitchen, you will never be able to cook with more than 4 pots or pans at a time. Declutter and save space by taking a serious look at your collection of pots and pans and eliminate any that you don’t absolutely love or use.
Also while you’re at it, you can ditch those non-stick pans that are peeling non stick coating. They’re unsafe for cooking and can turn into a potential carcinogen.
For a clutter free look, eliminate countertop appliances. Pull out all your appliances, declutter what you can and store the rest in cupboards.
I also recommend storing your plates and bowls in the under the counter cabinets. While this may seem atypical at first, you’ll notice how much easier cleaning and setting the table is when you don’t have to lift a stack of plates and always reach up.
Bonus for fellow parents: because kids can reach the plates safely they’ll be able to help you set the table at a much younger age!
Avoid the common pitfall of messy spice cabinets by storing your spices neatly (and flat) in a drawer. This trick keeps your spices more accessible and easier to spot when cooking.
If your water bottles keep tipping over on the shelf, I’ve got an easy fix: lay them flat in a drawer. In our home we don’t need more than 2 bottles/mugs per family member so of course, declutter at your discretion. If you don’t have a drawer to spare, lay the bottles flat in a basket on a low shelf that your kids can reach.
Decluttering and simplifying your kitchen can be a very rewarding experience that will continue to make you smile for months to come. I know many of my clients confess to me that since their decluttering job, they now LOVE cooking, LOVE their morning/dinner rituals and overall LOVE spending more time in their kitchens.
Why not give this a try in your own home? I’d love to see your new, improved and clutter free kitchens @bless_the_mess_
