Ladies, is your bathroom counter looking like an out of control mess? Then it might be time to get serious about organizing your makeup stash. Not only will you save time in the morning, and finally get to enjoy a clutter-free countertop, you can also use this opportunity to throw out expired products that are currently taking valuable space.
Tap into the joy of organizing & beautifying your space this week with this simple tutorial for how to manage & sort your makeup collection. I also included my favorite tricks, a downloadable makeup expiration guide AND a natural brush cleaner recipe, so make sure you read until the end to get access to these valuable resources.
How to Organize Your Makeup Step-by-Step
Step 1 – Take Everything Out
Take everything out of drawers, cabinets, purses etc. and gather your collection in one spot. This will make it easier to go through everything at once while also allowing you to get a sense of how much space you have at your disposal.
Step 2 – Assess Your Collection
Now that you’ve gathered all your products in one space, go through each item and declutter what you know you no longer need, want or use. While doing this, take your time assessing the expiration date on the products you are keeping because expired makeup can start to harbour bacteria. Use my easy downloadable makeup expiration guide if you’re not sure whether a product is expired or not.
Step 3 – Sort & Separate
Separate your makeup by use, for instance you can keep your daily products separated from the ones you use for special occasions to create evening looks or for other special events.
Step 4 – Organize Your Makeup
Select an organizer that works for you. Choose from acrylic on the counter organizers or drawer organizers but if you can afford the space, I strongly suggest drawers to keep your counter clutter-free. I use both a drawer and I also keep some select tools on the counter.
Step 5 – Use Your Products as Decor
This goes hand in hand with step 4. Many of your items can be used as decor in your bathroom or makeup vanity. FUN TIP: You can use clear jars for your cotton balls and q-tips, or opt for old candle-jars to keep your brushes upright & damage-free.
Tips to Keep Your Space Tidy
Tip #1: Separate your makeup so that essential items you use everyday are within easy reach.
Tip #2: Store things where you can see them. Lipsticks can be stored upside-down so that you can read color names at the bottom, and clear drawer separators can keep your palettes organized and visible.
Tip #3: Clear things out often. Go through your makeup collection regularly to make sure everything is in its right home, and you are clearing out any expired products. Remember to check if expired products can be recycled.
Tip #4: Don’t forget to clean your brushes to keep them bacteria-free. I use a natural homemade cleanser to clean mine.
Here’s how to make your own cleaner at home:
2 tablespoons of doTerra fractionated coconut oil
5 drops of melaleuca oil
5 drops of grapefruit oil
Add all ingredients to a bowl and swirl your makeup brush in for about 30 seconds. Rinse the brush under warm water, squeeze out the excess water and let dry naturally. Here’s a quick video of me demonstrating the process👇
