Do you consider yourself to be an organized person? Have you ever wondered how come some people seem to be more organized than others? Were they born that way or do they just really, really love cleaning?
Bewildering as it may seem for those that don’t love cleaning, being organized is just like any other skill as in… it takes practice to acquire and master.
While you won’t wake up tomorrow magically loving the art of organization or cleaning, you can certainly start taking steps today to get closer to that goal.
Being organized saves you time, money and other resources that you would otherwise invest in just trying to keep up with the mess around you. Beyond that, an organized home and life will bring you inner peace and sense of control incomparable to many others.
Many of my clients struggle to get organized because as soon as they try to start this new habit, the anxiety & fear of doing something unfamiliar kicks in, sometimes overwhelming them.
But that’s why I’m here to help! If you’d like to experience these transformations in your own home then keep reading!
There are GOOD habits, the ones that move you closer to your goal, and then there are BAD habits, the ones that hinder you from reaching that goal. First step in exercising your organization muscle is learning to invest time & effort into your good habits (read the list at the end of this article to see examples of good habits you can start implementing into your routine.)
Start by adjusting your existing habits first, and move from there by adding more good habits. Stay positive & commit to your goal by keeping track of your progress and rewarding yourself for the good work.
Decide for yourself what day of the week you’ll dedicate to cleaning and organizing and prepare everything you need in advance so you don’t get distracted with other chores when the time to clean comes around. For example, I teach my clients how to prepare their cleaning supplies so they have it ready to go when needed.
Once you make significant progress with one new habit, keep your momentum going by adding more. You’ll be so pleased with yourself watching you grow and evolve through this process.
An organized home is not only your duty, everyone in the home must participate. Get everyone excited about your new organized lifestyle and watch your family bloom together. This will relieve some stress on your shoulders and the whole family will be happier working together towards one common goal.
1. Open your blinds and curtains to let natural light in every morning.
No matter the weather, open your blinds in the morning and let the light stream in. Natural light is not only an automatic mood booster but it is also a great way to start off your day. Your house will also feel much more serene and inviting when you walk back in the door after a long day.
2. Make your bed each and every day.
An unmade bed will instantly make your entire bedroom look messy and disorganized. Take two minutes to make it up each morning before you head out the door, and you will thank yourself when you get home later. This quick and simple habit that will have a big impact on your happiness level.
3. Keep your kitchen and bathroom counters clutter – free.
These two areas are the first you’ll see each morning, and last you’ll see each night so keeping them clean and organized will help you lower your stress levels before a busy day & before you tuck into bed.
4. Keep your pantry organized.
It’s magical when you open up your cupboard and you can see all your ingredients neatly lined up. Many of my clients admit that this little habit instantly makes them want to cook more. Don’t forget to make a list before you go to the market so you never overstock your pantry again!
5. Label, label and label some more!
Make it easy to know the contents of all your storage bins and organizational products to allow for easy maintenance by other household members.
Forming & maintaining an organization habit is probably the most important skill
you can invest in, one that’s guaranteed to serve you & your family for a lifetime.
